Work from home
Ceramic work in India / 2021
In April 2021, I began working on my first ceramic collection in India. The country was shutting down, it was the beginning of the second wave of coronavirus. Amidst the chaos that was closing in I was able to source some clay from a studio in Delhi and also get the works fired.
I am grateful for those days because my daily practice then helped me to establish some stability. It gave me a sense of something moving, even when everything around wasn’t. What transpired was a series of small-sized vessels, inspired from the shapes and sounds of a garden my studio window was overlooking in Gurgaon, India. This collection was a personal commission by Rhea Kapoor.
part 2
In December 2021 , I went back to India in the hope of setting up my studio space, which has been one long calling, but you make plans and someone out there laughs.
I find it strange to describe the thoughts behind the works I created because my time there was completely over shadowed by the slow, yet sure decline of my dog’s health. Hence, it would be quite the farce to come up with some jargon to support my works now.
The truth of the matter is that the work, and the process of working helped me deal with my then reality. It gave me something to do other than to sink into helplessness.
So the works are made at random and I do not recall what was going on in my head or what I was trying to achieve.
Our dog is no more. I will remember this time for many reasons; for its intensity, for hot tears soaking a N95 mask, for the compromises that come with care-giving, for a certain amount of acceptance and whole lot of giving up trying to fix things, and maybe lastly, for the little bit of work I created.
