An Overview

To maximise the value of the 3-day workshop, it would be helpful if you arrived at the studio with some initial ideas about what you'd like to create. Below are some guidelines to help inspire your project:

Sculptural - Functional Objects:
Take a look around your home and personal space. Is there something you need that you'd like to personalize? Perhaps a vase, a jewelry holder, a photo frame, a lamp, or a soap dish. Instead of buying one of these products, why not create one and add your own unique touch?

Non-Functional Artistic Creations:
Do you want to create an art object but aren’t sure where to start? Think about a favorite painting, sculpture, or place you'd love to visit. Or perhaps a plant, or even abstract ideas like emotions. Bring those ideas to class, and we’ll explore the different ways to bring them to life in clay.

Day 1 ~ Skills

We’ll start with a simple hand-building project to assess your current skill level. I’ll observe your techniques and provide personalized tips and suggestions to help refine your approach. Along with traditional hand-building methods like coiling, pinching, and slab building, I’ll introduce you to a technique I call 'freestyle.' This method allows you to create freely, without being restricted by conventional techniques, offering more flexibility and creativity in your work.

This day will focus on strengthening your foundational skills while introducing new techniques with which you can revisit and plan your ideas for Day 2.

Day 2 ~ Concepts

On the second day, we’ll focus on your individual project, with no pressure to complete it right away. The emphasis will be on how to translate your ideas into tangible creations, exploring different ways to stylize and materialize your vision through discussions & examples to inspire your process.

We’ll also take time to discuss a few notable ceramic works for inspiration, helping you better understand the medium. This will include a brief exploration of the history of ceramics, as well as its evolution into contemporary practices.

Day 3 ~ The Beginning

The final day will be dedicated to advancing your project as much as possible, applying the skills and techniques covered throughout the course.

We will also discuss ways to continue your practice independently, ensuring that what you learn here becomes just the beginning of your creative journey in clay.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE

This is an intensive hand-building workshop, to maximise our experience with forms, glazing is not included. Three days isn’t quite enough time to complete big projects (anything over 20 cm). Clay requires time to dry between stages, so we’ll focus on creating smaller, manageable pieces.

The focus is on diversifying our skills which will be useful in attempting more ambitious projects. If you don’t complete a work I class, you are welcome to complete it in your space and have it fired later in the studio for free. Please note, the work should not exceed the limit of 20 centimetres.
